At Canditech, we analyzed feedback from 82,652 candidates across roles, industries, and seniority levels to understand how candidates experience skills-based hiring today and what they expect as we move into 2026. These skills-based hiring trends show a strong preference for hiring processes that prioritize real-world skills, mirror the job itself, and respect candidates’ time and need for flexibility.

  • 89% of candidates prefer a hiring process that includes a skills-based assessment, either combined with a resume or used on its own.

Skills assessments help candidates showcase their abilities while giving hiring teams a fast and confident way to identify top candidates. In practice, teams often send a short job simulation at the start of the process, either before or after a brief call explaining the role, and review resumes only for the top scorers they want to move forward.

This 2026 skills-based hiring trend allows teams to place less weight on resumes, reduce screening time, and uncover qualified candidates who may be overlooked by traditional resume filters.

A great example of putting this insight into practice comes from one of our Canditech users, a large gaming company. They used our job simulations to screen tech graduates for a technical role.

With 90% of candidates completing the assessment in the first week, the team reviewed the top 10 performers, conducted video interviews, and hired two junior employees within two weeks.
